A lot of golfers struggle with rotation within their swing. This isn’t just in the amateur game, a lot of Pros struggle with this aspect….so you’re not alone!
It would be easy to go and search YouTube or other online platforms, regarding rotation, but what does it really mean? I think I speak for the majority of professionals, that see amateurs rotating the hips too much in the backswing, followed by an over rotation of the shoulders in the downswing. This is not the correct sequencing.
Let’s look at Rory McIlroy as an example, at the top of Rory’s swing you will see that his upper half as rotated so his shoulder blades are pointing towards the target. Alternatively, take a look at Rory’s hips, there is a slight rotation as this is natural, however his belt buckle is still pointing at the ball.
In his downswing Rory will transfer his weight into his left side by rotating his hips towards the target, whilst trying to keep his shoulders pointing at the target.
This may sound complicated….however, luckily for you guys, I have a fantastic drill for you to do. This drill can be done at home, at the club or at the driving range. All you need to a 7i and a towel!
Firstly, fold the towel up and place it under your left foot, this is going to help you feel the pressure and weight shift between your feet when you rotate efficiently.
Secondly, take your set up without your 7i in hand. Swing to the top of your backswing and stop. Lean the 7i up against your left hip. The grip should be on your hip joint and the club head on the floor.
Third and final movement…from this position turn your hips so that the club falls behind you. If this is done correctly you will feel more pressure and weight go into your left foot, therefore pushing down on the towel.
This will help you rotate efficiently and effectively in your downswing. Helping you to resync your golf swing and regain some yardage that might have been robbed!
If this drill is completed incorrectly, then the clubhead will slide along the floor, due to the hips sliding / swaying.
Any questions or feedback feel free to speak with me next time you’re at the range, but for now….Swing Easy!
