Josh’s Tips & Tricks: Warm Up!

Fitness / Golf | 13 December, 2022

Intro

Hello golfers, welcome to this week’s tips & tricks. We are getting closer to Christmas and the weather is not ideal for golf. If you are playing and practising I want to give you some warm up, activation exercises so your body is more ready for practice. If you’re not practising you can practise these ready for when you are playing golf again.

This will be the last newsletter and blog this year so work on this during your Christmas break.

Why Warm Up?

There are many reasons to warm up for any sport or exercise. Here are a few reasons to warm up before your play on the course or your practice on the range:

  • Lower your risk of injury
  • Control your swing
  • Improve stability and power
  • Hit the ball harder without overstretching your swing
  • Improve clubhead speed and carry distance
  • Keep your swing on plane (or as close to it as possible!)
Improve the role of the pelvis throughout your swing

Trax performance let me into their warm gym to film some videos this week. They also helped me find some good form with my activation exercises.

Take a look at the exercsies below…

Exercises

Finding good technique when warming up is important, just like finding good technique in your golf swing. Try to copy the exercises I have done to activate and target the muscles in the lower body. One targets the glutes (bum), one targets the quads (front of thigh), one targets hamstrings (back of thigh). Each of these muscle groups are very important for the golf swing.

If you are keen to develop your strength to improve your golf then come and speak to Steve and George in the Trax gym. They are very knowledgeable and have a great facility to improve physical development.

Summary

If you warm up your golf will improve. If you improve your strength and mobility your golf will improve. As a coach I try to get people to technically improve, mentally improve and physically improve. If you continually develop in each of these areas your golf will progressively improve.
