Josh’s Tips & Tricks: Maintain Posture

Fitness / Golf | 22 August, 2022

Introduction

Hello golfers, welcome to this weeks tips & tricks. This week is a bit of a follow on from last week. If you have been practicing getting into good posture as we discussed you can now look to maintain it through the swing. Dynamic posture is the way we maintain posture during the swing. A loss of dynamic posture is moving away excessively up or down during the swing and causes issues with both ball striking and direction. Lets take a look at what we mean, how to identify it and a drill to correct it.

Dynamic Posture

Firstly take a look at the video below to see what we mean and an example of the drill we are going to practice.

Video analysis

If you have had a one to one lesson with me you would have seen your swing on video. For lots of people this is very beneficial because they don’t know what they are doing wrong. Asking someone to film you or getting a small tripod to fit your phone on can speed up the learning process. You can watch yourself to see the mistakes you’re making in the golf swing and then work to correct them.

I have used my video analysis software CoachNow to show the errors. The lines have been drawn from the head down to the hips, from the hips to the knees and then the knees to the ankles. If your head moves up or down either side of that line you are likely going to have issues with your strike. This can also lead to the hips moving away from the start position. If the hips thrust towards the ball during the downswing we call this early extension. This causes issues with both striking and direction/curvature of the golf ball.

Drill for correction

The “windmill” drill is quite fitting considering our driving range is called Windmill Leisure. It really helps to feel the head staying still and rotating the shoulders around the neck using the muscles in the back. If you feel yourself swaying side to side place something directly in line with the nose and stay over it during the drill. Try to feel like the arms make a straight line throughout and you stay leaning forward at the same angle. If you practice this feeling for long enough you will get used to staying in dynamic posture.

Summary

If you suffer with sporadic ball striking and various directional misses it could all come from dynamic posture. If you are correcting during the swing to get back to your start posture the results can vary dramatically. For more consistency in your game you need good posture to start with and then maintain it during the swing.
