Hello golfers and welcome to this weeks tips & tricks. This week I’m going to give you one of my favourite drills for working the club from the inside so you can hit that lovely high draw you have always dreamed about. I use it all the time in lessons because the majority of the people I see swing across the line and are always fighting the dreaded slice. If you spin the ball right left to right, hit it too high, or pull your shots this one is for you!
Like I said, most people I teach swing the club from out to in, or over the top. This means that the club is moving from right to left across the ball at impact. This often causes a loss of speed and efficiency and causes problems with ball striking. Naturally the club should be moving around the body during the swing, especially through the downswing. On the other hand, too far from the inside can also cause problems but it’s a lot less common.
See the image below for examples of this.
A great way to get the feeling on the club coming from behind the body is by placing two baskets on the ground. You don’t have to use baskets but they’re a good height, very visible, and can be easily moved.
Take a look at the video to see how to set them up and how to do the drill.
We are looking to try and get the club moving through the gates that the basket have made. The club will be coming from behind the body in the downswing and out towards the right of the target post impact. Start by doing small swings with a lofted club and gradually build up to a full swing. You don’t want to be smashing the baskets down the driving range on your first attempt! Don’t be scared of hitting off a small tee either as this drill can also change the angle of attack into the back of the ball.
To start with we might see some blocked shots that go a long way right. This is fine as the club path is sending the ball that way. If we want to then bring the ball back onto target we need some clubface rotation. Try to ensure that the hands and arms are relaxed to aid with rotating the clubface. If the clubface stays open with rigid forearms the clubface will be left open only sending the ball further right.
This drill is a really easy way to see and feel which way the club should be moving through the back of the ball. I don’t want everyone to be able to play golf with a perfect draw every shot but having the understanding of how to is very important. If you’re a slicer and want to lower the left to right sidespin this is a great starting point.
If you would like me to double check if you’re doing this drill correctly quickly grab me on the driving range or book in a lesson for some more in depth information.
